Through his childhood desire to become a physician, Dr. Sutton entered into the field of health care. He credits his success to a combination of his people skills, initiative to deal with situations, and perseverance. He has three years of experience as the chief medical officer of Harris County Hospital District In this position, he attends administrative meetings, ensuring the quality of the school. He also spends several hours a day in the endoscopy unit.

A Fellow of the American College of Physicians, Dr. Sutton earned a doctorate from the University of Michigan in 1979. He is a member of the Harris County Medical Society, Texas Medical Association, and American Gastroenterology Association.
