Eleanor L. Johnson Honored by Cambridge Who's Who for Excellence in Secondary Education
Eleanor L. Johnson noted for steadfast commitment to today's youth
SYRACUSE, NY, December 27, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Eleanor L. Johnson, a retired American History Teacher formerly of Jamesville-DeWitt High School, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in secondary education. For such excellence, Ms. Johnson was chosen for inclusion in "Cambridge Publishing's Top 101 Industry Executives," a book highlighting the personal and professional achievements of its most esteemed members.
Eleanor L. Johnson is a retired American history teacher who taught at Jamesville-DeWitt High School. Throughout the course of her more than 54-year career, she lectured on American history to seventh- through 12th-grade students. Ms. Johnson became involved in her profession, taking after her mother, who was also a teacher. She had an illustrious career enriching the lives of youths, taking extra steps to help children with learning disabilities. Additionally, she was involved in writing the New York State Regents Examinations, which enabled her to provide useful hints and tips to students preparing to take the test. Noting that schools nowadays are very test-oriented (especially with the No Child Left Behind act), she recounts how she always strove to help her kids overcome learning obstacles. "We don't save them all," she shared, "but the schools are the first and last institutions to get their hands on them." Her commitment to students entailed giving second and third chances when learning a particular lesson when most other teachers would have given up.
Ms. Johnson, who is passionate about history, is currently writing a book to be prepared for publication. Entitled "Turning the Pages," it details the history in DeWitt. While she has written approximately 350 pages, she admits that it is "nowhere near completion." She continues to devote five hours a day to the book and, thankfully, she enjoys the work she puts into it. "I can't do anything else," she joked. "I'm not going to just sit at home, doing nothing; nor will I be going to any tea parties anytime soon." In whatever spare time she has, she enjoys traveling, reading history, and researching the early settlers of Upstate New York.
Ms. Johnson received a master's degree in Asian studies in 1963 from Syracuse University and a bachelor of arts in American history in 1954 from the University of Rochester. She is a member of the DeWitt Preservation and Historical Society, the Jamesville-DeWitt Faculty Association, the Onondaga Historical Association, the New York State United Teachers union, and the New York State Retired Teachers Association.
