Dr. Armitage is a graduate of Michigan State University

LEWISVILLE, NC, December 17, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Donald L. Armitage, Ph.D., Cantor Emeritus of Augsburg Lutheran Church (ELCA), has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in music.

A product of his family's strong musical and spiritual history, Dr. Armitage has 44 years of professional experience in church music, and maintains an expertise in liturgical planning, service playing, and organ performance. As a cantor, he planned worship services and liturgies, directed choirs, organized hymn and psalm festivals, maintained various keyboard instruments, and represented the church in various meetings, functions and events.

In 1978 Dr. Armitage founded and then became Music Director of the Piedmont Chamber Singers, a position he held for 21 years. The Singers, a community based chamber choir that specializes in Baroque and contemporary choral music, is still in existence today. He has played organ recitals in a variety of churches, including the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. He has been the University Organist at Wake Forest University since 1978. Dr. Armitage has also been active as a conference planner, director and clinician. He attributes his career accomplishments to a great love of his profession, hard work, the help and enthusiasm of friends and colleagues, and the constant support of Mary, his wife and best friend.

Dr. Armitage's academic work includes a Bachelor of Music degree from Central Methodist University, a Master of Sacred Music degree from Union Theological Seminary in NYC and, in 1982, a PH.D. in Applied Music, Theory and Literature from Michigan State University. He is affiliated with the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians, the Presbyterian Association of Musicians, the American Guild of Organists, and the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada. He is also a member of Omicron Delta Kappa and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He is a former board member of Reynolda Rotary. He was listed in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities (1964) and in Outstanding Young Men of America (1972). In his spare time Dr. Armitage volunteers for various charitable and nonprofit organizations, continues to conduct research and act as advisor in the areas of church music and congregational song.
